National Remembrance Service

The Spiritualists’ National Union is happy to announce that our application to attend this year’s National Remembrance Sunday event at the Cenotaph, in London’s Whitehall has been accepted. This event, which commemorates British and Commonwealth servicemen and women who died in the two World Wars and later conflicts has taken place for over nine decades. For the very first time, Spiritualism will join the existing 15 faith and belief denominations in paying respect to those who gave their lives defending others.

Minister David Bruton, on behalf of the Spiritualists’ National Union, will take part in the ceremony. Whilst a growing number of Spiritualists take part in ceremonies around the UK, this national representation reflects the growing profile of the religion. Minister Bruton said, “This is an important step forward for Spiritualism, and I feel honoured to represent my fellow Spiritualists on this poignant day.”

Spiritualism has a long heritage in supporting those in conflict. In the First World War Spiritualists raised funds for six motor ambulances to help those injured on the front lines. In recent times, the Spiritualists’ National Union was proud to create a memorial obelisk at the National Memorial Arboretum. As well as providing a permanent place for Spiritualists to pay their respects, it is a focus for the annual Peace Walk, which brings together people from around the UK, and further afield.

Spiritualism’s presence at this year’s national service enables the religion to stand alongside other mainstream religions for the first time, and provide a focus for Spiritualists to remember both Spiritualists and others who played their part in defending peace. As is usual, the event will be televised, and widely featured in national media.
